Hey debriefer!

One of OpenAI's original co-founders just jumped ship to Anthropic - and his job is to use Claude to build the next Claude. Google I/O dropped a 24/7 AI agent that runs while you sleep. Meta is cutting 8,000 jobs THIS week to fund a $145B AI war chest. And Nvidia reports tonight in what might be the most-watched earnings of the year.

I also dropped 10 image prompts that make content look like you hired a designer, and a 30-minute walkthrough to build your own AI chatbot for free.

Let's debrief.

In today's AI Debrief:

  • 📰 The AI defection that just rewrote the talent war

  • 🤖 Google's 24/7 AI agent (it runs even when your laptop is closed)

  • 💸 Meta cuts 8,000 jobs to fund its $145B AI bet

  • 🎨 10 AI image prompts I'm using to crush content this week

  • 🎓 Build your own AI chatbot in 30 minutes (free)

THE AI TALENT WAR

The debrief: Andrej Karpathy, one of OpenAI's original co-founders and former Tesla AI lead, announced Tuesday that he's joined Anthropic. He started this week on the pre-training team under team lead Nick Joseph.

The details: This isn't a normal hire. Karpathy is going to lead a new group focused on using Claude to accelerate Claude's own pre-training research - basically, AI building AI. Pre-training is the most compute-intensive, most expensive phase of building a frontier model, so if Claude can meaningfully speed up its own training pipeline, the economics of the AI race shift fast. Anthropic's annualized revenue has tripled to $30 billion since December, and they've become a magnet for OpenAI talent: over the past two years OpenAI has lost more than a dozen senior executives and researchers, including former CTO Mira Murati and reinforcement learning pioneer John Schulman.

Why it matters: Anthropic just signaled that the next moat isn't compute or data - it's whether your AI can train the next generation of AI. If recursive self-improvement actually works, the 12-18 month gap between model releases collapses. Translation for builders: the tools you're using today are going to feel obsolete way faster than they did last year. Don't wait for the perfect AI stack. Build with what works now and stay ready to swap.

🤖 Google I/O went full agent. Google unveiled Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent that runs in the cloud and keeps working even when your laptop is closed - think monitoring credit card fraud, tracking school updates, or watching for specific deals. They also dropped Gemini 3.5 Flash with agentic capabilities, Gemini Omni for AI video generation, and bumped AI Ultra to $100/month with 5x the usage of AI Pro. The agent era has a price tag now.

💸 Meta starts cutting 8,000 jobs today. Meta begins eliminating roughly 10% of its workforce on Wednesday, May 20, leaving 6,000 open roles unfilled. The cuts come as Meta raises 2026 capex to $145 billion - up from $39.2 billion in 2024 - most of it Nvidia GPUs, AI infrastructure deals, and the Llama model ecosystem. The pattern is unmistakable: trim humans, scale compute.

📊 Nvidia reports tonight. Nvidia unveils its fiscal 2027 Q1 results after the close today, May 20. Analysts expect earnings of $1.78 per share, up 120% year over year, on revenue of $79.2 billion (up 79.5% YoY). Options pricing implies a ~6.5% move in the stock - a $350-355 billion swing in market value, larger than the market cap of 90% of S&P 500 companies. If you want one signal on whether AI capex is still accelerating, this is it.

🏢 OpenAI launched its own consulting army. OpenAI is launching the OpenAI Deployment Company, designed to embed Forward Deployed Engineers inside enterprises to build and deploy AI systems. It launches with more than $4 billion of initial investment and acquired Tomoro to bring in experienced FDEs from day one. OpenAI isn't just selling models anymore - they're selling implementation.

OpenAI and Anthropic are racing to build the AI that builds AI. Cool. You don't need to wait for AGI to make AI work for you today - here are 10 image prompts that turn your phone into a content studio.

10 PLUG-AND-PLAY IMAGE PROMPTS

10 prompts I'm using right now to crank out content that looks like I hired a designer. They work in ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, Gemini - whatever image model you're using.

Why this matters now: Google's Gemini Omni for AI video is dropping soon. AI Ultra is $100/mo. The expensive tools are coming. But the prompts that turn AI image generation from "meh, that looks like AI" into "wait, who designed this?" - those work today, for free.

How to use them:

  1. Watch the 3-minute walkthrough below

  2. Pick the prompt that matches what you need (LinkedIn carousel, YouTube thumbnail, hero image, social tile, etc.)

  3. Swap in your variables (subject, mood, style)

  4. Generate, tweak once, ship it

BUILD YOUR OWN AI CHATBOT IN 30 MINUTES (FREE)

This week, learn how to build a custom AI chatbot - no code required. Customer support bot, personal research assistant, knowledge base for your business, sales SDR that answers FAQs at 3am - you can spin one up in under 30 minutes, free.

The 5-step build:

  1. Pick your platform (Custom GPTs, Claude Projects, or a free open-source option - I'll show you which to choose)

  2. Define the chatbot's one job in a single sentence (this is where 90% of people mess up)

  3. Upload your knowledge base (PDFs, docs, FAQs, transcripts - whatever your bot needs to know)

  4. Stress-test it with 5-10 real questions you'd expect users to ask

  5. Embed it where people will actually use it - your site, Slack, Discord, or share the link
